Accommodations

Beginning forward is a vee berth with removable insert which will make a large double berth. EAch berth has a bookshelf, light and 2-speed fan. Ventilation is provided by a large opening hatch. A bi-fold door opens into the head, with WC and sink to port. The sink has hot and cold pressure water and optional foot pump. There are seven drawers and a hanging locker to starboard. There is a shower with teak grating over drain area. There are three additional storage lockers and 2 shelves. Moving aft is main saloon. There is an L-shaped settee to port with adjustable height dinette, and a settee to starboard. Both settees pull out to make berths, and each is equipped with lee boards. There are six lockers and a bookshelf behind each settee. On the forward bulkhead is a Force 10 propane heater. Also is a clock, barometer, and 2 gimbaled brass oil lamps. There is a brass trawler lamp over the dining table. The saloon in ventilated with s/s Nicro solar vents and a large opening hatch. Aft of the settee to port is the galley. Across from the galley to starboard is the nav station with seat and large chart table. All instruments and electrical panels are located in this area. Extra storage is provided for additional charts and books. Moving aft from the nav station is a bi-fold door leading into aft cabin which has a small double berth to starboard and a single berth to port. There is a sink with hot/cold pressure water. Each berth has bookshelf, flexible reading lamp and two-speed fan. There is ample stowage in the aft cabin in a hanging locker and under the berths. Each berth has a fixed port and there is a large opening port into the cockpit from the aft cabin. The interior is done in varnished mahogany with a teak and holly sole. All mechanical and electrical systems on board are fully accessible.

The galley is well equipped with storage lockers. Also has a 3 burner gimbaled propane stove with oven, Adler Barbour 12-volt refrigerator/freezer with extra insulation, stainless steel sink with fresh water by presssure or pump and sea water foot pump. Above galley sink is a Paloma hot water heater which provides hot water on demand.

Sails

The yacht was completely re-rigged in 1989 in preparation for the two-handed transatlantic race. All new halyards, new oversized stainless steel wire rigging, Profurl roller furling, 6 barient chrome self-tailing two speed winches were installed as primaries, secondaries, and for halyards (two additional Enke winches on mast). All halyards and control lines were led aft to self-tailing winches and stoppers for singlehanding. Genoa cars are adjustable from the cockpit. A new boom was fabricated with internal two part reef lines. A rigid boom vang was installed. Telescoping spinnaker pole. Many spare rigging (with staysail halyard) and removable running backstays were designed and installed for long distance offshore sailing. All Harken hardware. Galerider drogue. Full batten Dacron mainsail with lazyjacks; 135% Roller furling Dacron jib with padded luff to hold shape while reefing; Mylar drifter with spinnaker sock; Heavy weather jib; Storm jib; Storm trysail

Description

BAO YU was bought in 1988 by an owner who wanted to complete in the two-handed Transatlantic RAce in 1990, and then to keep her as a family cruiser after the event. The yacht was refitted extensively in preparation for the race and was set up to comply with the Offshore Racing Council Category O Special REgs. For "Trans-Ocean Races". She sailed to England from Newport, Rhode Island in 1989 and raced back from Plymouth, England to Newport, Rhode Island in 1990, achieving third in her class. She was then sold to the present owner who has been sailing her on the Great Lakes.
